More on the Foundation ProgramObedience training in Murfreesboro
Most people think of dog obedience training as teaching commands like sit, down, stay, and come. Those matter, but at Talking Tails obedience goes deeper than a list of commands. Real obedience is about communication. It's a dog that is aware of you, understands what you're asking, and can respond reliably, whether you're in your living room in Murfreesboro or walking through a busy store in Rutherford County.
That's why every obedience training program we offer starts with the fundamentals. When a dog has a strong foundation and a clear understanding of how you communicate, commands become easy, and everyday life with your dog becomes a lot more enjoyable.
The “stubborn” dog
One of the most common things we hear from owners in Murfreesboro and across Rutherford County is “my dog is just stubborn.” In our experience, that's rarely the case. Most dogs that seem disobedient simply have no idea what's being asked of them. They're getting mixed signals, inconsistent cues, or instructions that make sense to people but not to dogs.
Dogs read the body long before they understand words. Different inputs from you lead to different results from your dog, and small changes in your timing, posture, and movement can completely change how your dog responds. Once owners see this for themselves, they stop thinking of their dog as stubborn and start seeing a dog that's ready to learn, as long as the message is clear.
Our approach
Our trainers teach through touch, movement, and body language, the way dogs naturally communicate. We don't wait for a dog to make a mistake and then correct it. Instead, we make the answer clear from the very start, going out of our way to help your dog get it right the first time. If it doesn't click right away, we adjust how we communicate with that individual dog until it understands what we're asking.
Above all, we focus on the fundamentals. Everything we do starts with making your dog aware of us, because we can't solve a problem if the dog isn't aware of us in the first place. That's why we don't treat behavior problems as separate projects. Jumping, leash pulling, and other common issues are resolved through the same fundamentals we begin teaching on day one.
Every trainer on our team works the same way. Whoever you and your dog work with, you're getting the same clear, consistent approach.
Real-world distractions
A command that only works in a quiet room isn't finished. That's why real-world distractions are built into our obedience training from the start, including new people, other dogs, sounds, and changing environments. Your dog learns to stay aware of you no matter what's going on around it.
Our philosophy is simple: train as you live. We don't send you home with homework to practice for set periods of time. Instead, we teach you to use the fundamentals throughout your normal, everyday life, because that's where lasting success comes from.
It's also important to know that every dog training program requires owner input to maintain and grow what the dog has learned. Our trainers lay the foundation and teach you how to build on it. Your consistency is what keeps it strong.
