Off-leash training in Murfreesboro
Off-Leash Freedom Starts With the Fundamentals
For a lot of dog owners, off-leash reliability is the ultimate goal: a dog that stays with you because it understands you, not because something is holding it there. At Talking Tails, off-leash training isn't a separate trick we add at the end. It's the natural result of strong fundamentals and clear communication between you and your dog.
Everything we teach starts with making your dog aware of us. A dog that is truly aware of its owner doesn't need to be held in place. It chooses to stay close, check in, and respond, whether you're at home, at the park, or out in the busiest parts of Murfreesboro or Rutherford County.
How we communicate
Training That Doesn't Depend on a Leash
Our training doesn't require a leash at all. We communicate through touch, movement, and body language, the way dogs naturally communicate, so the leash is never how your dog learns what we're asking. In fact, we start many dogs without one, in a safe, controlled environment, right from the beginning.
A leash still has its place as a simple safety tool, especially around other dogs or while a newer dog is still settling in, and we use it that way when the situation calls for it. But it's never the foundation of our training. The foundation is your dog's awareness of you, and what you do with that awareness.
Step by step
How We Build Off-Leash Reliability
We don't wait for a dog to make a mistake and then correct it. We make the answer clear from the very start, going out of our way to help your dog get it right the first time. If it doesn't click right away, we adjust how we communicate with that individual dog until it understands what we're asking. That approach matters even more off leash, because you have to be able to relay information to your dog without relying on a leash.
From there, we build reliability step by step. Real-world distractions like new people, other dogs, sounds, and changing environments are part of the process, so your dog learns to stay aware of you no matter what's happening around it.
And because every dog training program requires owner input to maintain and grow, we teach you how to handle your dog off leash too. Our philosophy is simple: train as you live. The more you use the fundamentals in your everyday life, the stronger your dog's off-leash reliability becomes.
It's also worth saying: just because your dog is capable of working off leash doesn't mean it should be off leash everywhere. Traffic, other dogs, wildlife, and local leash laws all matter, and caution should always be used when deciding where off-leash freedom makes sense. We'll help you learn to read each situation so you can make that call with confidence. For dogs with an extensive bite history or any signs of aggression, the answer is clear: they should never be off leash anywhere they would have the opportunity to act on that behavior.
Group classes
Taking It Further in Group Classes
For clients who want to keep progressing, our group classes are where off-leash work really takes shape. When you are ready, you can practice your off-leash skills in group class around controlled distractions.
We switch up class locations to include Barfield Park, Lowe's or Home Depot, or a restaurant or brewery, so your dog learns to stay with you in all kinds of real-world environments.
